Japan's second largest carmaker, Nissan's manufacturing alliance with Suzuki for the Indian market is just the start of its big India plans. A premium mid-sizer and small cars are in the pipeline and they could be a part of its next round of announcements in July, reports CNBC-TV18.
This premium mid-sizer- the Nissan Cefiro, could well be on its way to India. According to sources, this could be Nissan India's second vehicle after the X-trail, which was launched in August 2004.
When contacted, a Nissan India official said a car that will fall between the Rs 16 lakh Honda Accord and the Rs 21 lakh Camry is in the offing. In fact, Nissan's Vice President, Yasuaki Hashimoto told CNBC-TV18 in an exclusive interview that the car will be brought through the fully built import route.
Corporate VP, Nissan Motor, Yasuaki Hashimoto said, "We are planning to introduce a mid-size Sedan on a CBU basis. After that, we are looking at various models to introduce in India."
A couple of those models will be in the compact car segment, which dominates more than 60% of the car market. Sources say the Nissan car; to be built by Maruti will be the Nissan Moco or a similar model. Maruti could be manufacturing more than just this model for Nissan.
MD, Nissan India, Yoshie Motohiro says, "We are going to ask Suzuki to produce our cars. That means, we need more volumes of course and that would mean models in the A & B segments."
While Maruti Udyog is likely to manufacture a few models for Nissan, the latter will also set up its own manufacturing facility. It is currently scouting for a manufacturing location.
The pipeline is hot and Nissan India is likely to launch its premium mid-sizer, in July.
